Pakistan expresses concern over ‘massive arms build-up’ in region

The National Command Authority (NCA) on Wednesday noted with concern the destabilising “massive arms build-up in the conventional and strategic domains in the region”.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), a detailed briefing was given to the forum on evolving conflict dynamics in the region. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Imran Khan. The army’s top brass was also present on the occasion.

“The NCA viewed these developments as detrimental to peace and security and asserted that Pakistan will take all measures to ensure the strategic stability in the region without entering into an arms race,” it added.

The NCA reiterated maintaining full spectrum deterrence in line with the policy of credible minimum deterrence and expressed satisfaction on the development of strategic capabilities.

The official statement said that the NCA expressed full confidence in the command and control systems as well as security measures in place to ensure the comprehensive security of the strategic assets of Pakistan.

The high-level huddle re-affirmed that Pakistan, as a responsible nuclear state, would continue to contribute meaningfully towards the global efforts to improve nuclear security and nuclear non-proliferation measures.

The NCA appreciated high standards of training and operational readiness of the strategic forces and appreciated the scientists and engineers whose dedicated contributions have enabled Pakistan to successfully pursue the desired objectives, the PMO statement further said.

All members of the NCA, including federal ministers of foreign affairs, defence, finance and interior and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, Chiefs of Army, Navy and Air Force as well as Director-General Inter-Services Intelligence attended the meeting.

In May, PM Imran visitedthe NCA nuclear facility of the Strategic Forces Command and expressed full confidence in the country’s nuclear capability and protection to strengthen the national defence.

The premier appreciated and acknowledged the untiring efforts of all the scientists and personnel associated with Pakistan’s Strategic Programme and expressed full confidence in Pakistan’s nuclear capability and protection to strengthen the national defence.

Pakistan has been actively contributing to international efforts for strengthening global norms on arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament and follows the latest international standards on export controls, nuclear safety and security at the national level.
