Umesh Yadav picked the wickets of Craig Overton and Dawid Malan early in the morning session on Day 2 of the 4th Test at The Oval. However, Ollie Pope and Jonny Bairstow stitched an important partnership as the hit a flurry of boundaries to lead their team’s recovery. England were placed at 127/5 after 36 overs, still trailing by 64 runs. Yadav started from where he left off yesterday when he claimed skipper Joe Root’s all-important wicket yesterday. Jasprit Bumrah bowled a fiery spell late in the day to remove both England openers, Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns in an over. After being sent in to bat by Root, India had a horrific start to their innings as they lost three wickets in the first session on Day 1. Captain Virat Kohli tried to steady the ship and hit a fine half-century but wickets kept tumbling from the other end. Ollie Robinson dismissed Kohli for 50, leaving India tottering at 105 for five. Shardul Thakur, who replaced Ishant Sharma in the XI, saved India from the blushes as he smashed the fastest half-century in a Test in England to bail out the visitors. Shardul hit three sixes and seven boundaries en route to his 36-ball 57 as India posted 191. (LIVE SCORECARD)
